SHERQ OFFICER
JOB DESCRIPTION: SHERQ OFFICER
Our client seeks an individual to undertake the role of SHERQ Officer who must be fully equipped with SHERQ knowledge and understanding of its legislation. This candidate must have sufficient experience in SHERQ and thorough understanding of health and safety in the construction sector.
KEY Responsibilities:
Investigate accidents, incidents, non-conformances, causes of ill-health and complaints.
Inspect workplaces to enforce safety laws.
Lead by example and examine ways to improve health and safety standards.
Assist in the development of health and safety programmes and strategies
Primary Activities:
Carry out continuous inspections of the site areas (minimum 70% of the time in the field), treat and report any discrepancies.
Assist Management in coordinating and controlling activities with respect to Health and Safety.
Carry out any other specific tasks defined by Management to support the implementation and maintaining of the Management of Health and Safety Management System.
Ensure legal compliance with OHS Act, ISO health and safety standards, client’s requirements, as well as any other applicable legislation at all times.
Conduct all internal training on employees. (Induction, HIRA, Correct use of PPE, etc.) Ensure all employees/visitors are inducted prior to be permitted to work on site.
Compiling and updating of Health and Safety files.
Compile and review risk assessments. (Baseline, Issue and continuous). Communicate risk assessments with all employees.
Ensure that daily safe task instructions are completed correctly and communicated.
Ensure all health & safety reps conduct monthly H&S rep inspections of their work areas.
Manage Safety Representatives and conduct monthly safety meetings with safety reps and contractors, prepare minutes of meetings.
Manage safety performance of subcontractors. Ensure no sub-contractor is permitted to work on site without being in possession of a safety file.
Ensure that all appointments are done as per the site SHE organogram and the communication of the responsibilities to the appointee is explained.
Conduct weekly safety toolbox talks.
Prepare, conduct, review and update of emergency evacuation plans. Assist with the formulation of emergency/contingency plans for natural disaster, industrial action, political unrest, fire, explosions, and bomb threats.
Conduct safety inspections. Ensure that all applicable inspections are done on monthly basis and are updated.
Ensure safety signs and notices are prominently displayed.
Compiling monthly safety hours and other reports to Management.
Revision of Safe Work Procedures and Method Statements when applicable and required.
Conduct Monthly Planned Job Observations.
Conduct accident/incident investigations.
Conducting regular site audits and report to Management.

Good communication skills-both written and spoken
Preferred Qualifications and/or Requirements:
Registered with the SACPCMP
National Safety Management Diploma, SAMTRAC or equivalent
3-5 years construction experience
Valid Driver’s licence – Own transport
