Position Summary
Job Title: Occupational Health Nurse (OHN)

Working Schedule: Part-Time — 3 Days per Week

Job Purpose
The Occupational Health Nurse will establish, maintain, and manage the on-site clinic services and medical surveillance programs tailored to the printing and packaging environment.
The successful candidate will manage specific workplace hazards—including exposure to organic solvents/inks, high noise levels, paper dust, heavy machinery ergonomics, and shift-work fatigue—ensuring full compliance with South African legislation (OHSA) and promoting workforce wellness.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Medical Surveillance & Health Screening:
Conduct pre-employment, periodic, transfer, and exit medical assessments.
Perform baseline and screening tests, including:
Audiometry screening (Noise-induced hearing loss monitoring due to high-decibel printing presses).
Spirometry testing (Lung function assessments for exposure to paper dust, solvent fumes, and airborne particulates).
Vision screening – (Quality control and machine operator acuity).
Issue Medically Fit for Duty certificates in line with specific risk profiles (e.g., working at heights, operating forklifts, shift work).
Occupational Injury & Illness Management (COIDA)
Manage the initial assessment, treatment, and triage of Injuries on Duty (IOD).
Complete and process all Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) documentation accurately.
Assist with return-to-work, light-duty placement, and rehabilitation plans for injured or ill employees.
Clinic Management & Administration
Oversee day-to-day operations of the primary medical clinic on site.
Order, store, and manage stock of medical consumables, emergency medications, and equipment in compliance with dispensing regulations.
Maintain strict confidentiality of all medical records while keeping statutory registers up to date for internal and external SHEQ audits.
Hazard Management & Plant Engagement
Conduct routine plant walkthroughs to inspect working conditions, chemical handling (printing inks, solvents, adhesives), and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance.
Liaise with the SHEQ team on baseline Risk Assessments and incident investigation reports.
Serve as a core member of the company’s Health & Safety Committee.
Wellness & Primary Health
Manage chronic disease monitoring (hypertension, diabetes, HIV/TB management) to reduce absenteeism. Plan and run targeted health awareness sessions (e.g., ergonomics for manual lifting, chemical handling safety, mental health).
Qualifications
Degree / Diploma in General Nursing (Registered Nurse).
Postgraduate Diploma / BTech in Occupational Health Nursing.
Active registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner.
Active registration with SASOHN (South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing)
Audiometry (SASOHN / SAMS registered).
Spirometry (NIOSH / SADEC accredited).
Dispensing License(Pharmacy Act requirement).
Basic Life Support (BLS) / First Aid Level 3.
Experience
3–5+ years of operational experience in an occupational health environment.
Direct experience in manufacturing, packaging, FMCG, or printing industries highly advantageous.
Hands-on experience with COIDA reporting processes and Department of Employment and Labour compliance.
Key Competencies & Skills
Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA 85 of 1993), Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations, and COIDA.
Clinic Operations: Independent management of medical inventory, equipment calibration checks, and audit preparation.
Communication: Fluency in English (knowledge of local languages spoken in Gauteng, e.g., isiZulu or Sesotho, is advantageous).
Computer Literacy: Proficient in MS Office suite and occupational health management software/systems.
Interpersonal Skills: Professional, empathetic, with strong ethical boundaries regarding patient confidentiality.
